SHRESHTA: Centrally funded Scheme of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment for Residential Education to meritorious SC students in Class 9th and 11th from AY 2022-23
Madam/Sir,
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India,is launching a Scheme for Residential Education for SC Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA). The SHRESHTA is fully funded by the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment which is being rolled out from session 2022-23 onwards. It aims at providing residential educational opportunities for meritorious SC students (both boys and girls). The enclosed brochure has all details about the SHRESHTA scheme. The salient points include:
- It provides an entry at class 9th and 11th in select CBSE affiliated private residential schools for completion of education till 12th standard. The selection is through a national level test NETS (National Entrance Test for SHRESHTA) to be conducted by the National Testing Agency in Computer Based Test Mode.
- The scheme involves disbursement of scholarships directly to the admission granting schools. The scholarships cover school fee (including Tuition Fee etc.) and Hostel Fee (including Mess Charges etc.) subject to maximum limit as mentioned in the brochure. Tentative number of seats from the year 2022-23 till 2025-26, the obligations on the part of schools for admissions and the provision of Bridge Course etc. have all been covered out in the brochure
- The scheme is applicable only for residential schools (independent affiliated with the CBSE upto Class 12th. Schools must be in operation for 5 years or more with 75 % pass percentage or more in Class 10 and 12 in last 3 years. The Scheme provides an opportunity for reputed schools for onboarding in the development interventions offering high quality education to the meritorious students of Scheduled Caste communities.
For implementation of the scheme, a letter jointly signed by the Secretary, Department of School Education and the Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India has been issued to States and UTS seeking their help including dissemination of the scheme. The CBSE would hold interactions and clarification sessions in VC mode with principals of the schools that have submitted consent on the link given below:

In view of the announcement of this central scheme by the Government of India, all the residential/schools (independent category) affiliated with the CBSE and who meet the above-mentioned criteria are encouraged to submit their online consent on the link by 25th March 2022.
